When, in June of 1976, Mother Nuoro gave birth to the Ugly Duckling (Canarjos), she saw right away that he was strange and quite ugly.
“None of my other children are like this one”, mother said to everyone’s incredulous and curious faces.
The poor ugly duckling couldn’t ever speak because he couldn’t lay any eggs, he wasn’t considered intelligent because he couldn’t purr like a cat; He was forced to live separated from the others between thousands of difficulties, in a world that did not accept him as he was. Learning how to swim, alone, he also learned who he was.
His desire to follow some magnificent birds and to be like them pushed him to face new intricate situations, he felt a strange feeling he couldn’t quite explain.
One day he found himself surrounded by many beautiful birds and he gave up right away because he knew they would kill him for he was ugly; it was better to end it so the ducks wouldn’t tease him and the chickens wouldn’t peck at him anymore. But he looked at the water and surprisedly saw that his image wasn’t that of an ugly duckling but that of a candid swan. Mother Nuoro had given birth to a beautiful individual.
He was happy but not proud for those who are good and intelligent cannot be proud even if they wish for it.
This swan flew and reached the highest peak in the world, winning, in the skies of LLANGOLLEN, in Whales, the acclaimed prize of the World Championship of Ethnic Music in 2000 and 2006.
